The making of a Stop Motion Puppet - Key Anatomy and Fabrication Considerations.
Designing and building puppets for stop motion animation is a complex and challenging business. Even when built in a simple way using low cost materials a stop motion puppet is then called upon to perform, to convince an audience that it lives. A simple blob of plasticine can be placed under camera by a complete novice, and within minutes it can be nudged and shaped to simulate motion.(Usually uncontrolled, twitchy, jumpy and erratic motion.) In the hands of an experienced animator, observer and sculptor that blob can be shaped and manipulated, designed and developed to produce a performance which connects with an audience, conveys emotion, displays character and tells a story.
For the beginner, investing time, energy, passion and money into gaining that experience is key. Animating, testing and experimenting with design, materials and processes will build up a bank of strategies, solutions and design approaches which demystify the building of stop motion puppets.
This resource will attempt to provide some very basic information and clarification on how stop motion puppets are constructed.
